Terrarium Workshop

$70.00

May 4, 2024 @ 11am CST
Chicago

Learn how to build your own closed terrarium -- a miniature ecosystem that you can keep in your house! Bre will guide you through the entire process of making a glass terrarium that requires only occasional maintenance and watering because it is almost completely self-sustaining. When you arrive you will choose a container and then build your entire environment from the bottom up. We'll discuss substrates, soil formulations, and then we'll get to the juicy part -- plant material! All supplies are provided. You leave with a full understanding of how to repeat the process at home and care for closed terrariums and the terrarium you built with your own hands!

Students are welcome to bring a small object like a rock or a little garden gnome to put in their terrariums -- just make sure the item could handle high humidity for an extended amount of time (think ceramic and stone, not wood).

This class is taking place in the spacious and sunny studio of artist Mickey Alice Kwapis. The studio is located inside Mana Contemporary, on the east side of 2233 S. Throop St. Please park in the east-facing lot and come to the entrance with colorful murals. Wait on the benches by the freight elevators and watch the videos of the building's resident peregrine falcons until everyone has arrived, then we will take the elevator up as a group with a staff member. More information will be provided to participants closer to the event date.
